Farming Lands - ItaliAfrica manifest
This is the aim of Farming Lands-ItaliAfrica, a network of organizations, bodies and individuals, which was born from a lasting relationship between the Italian and the African rural world.
Everything started in 1997, when a group of Western Africa farmers’ organizations suggested to some Italian NGOs to start an open debate on farming. The inspiring idea was to overcome the common conception of international cooperation as a mere transfer of resources and technologies from North to South.
By launching a fruitful exchange between African rural organizations and the Italian civil society, “Farming Lands-ItaliAfrica” aims to stimulate a shared reflection on global challenges and opportunities the two geographic areas have to deal with. The “Supporting Group to the Western Africa Rural movement” has been staring after the rural world structuring in Western Africa for 10 years. The movement is now joining a larger network which involves other European countries’ organizations, widening its commitment and reflection on the above mentioned issues also to other African areas.
With the adoption of the name “Farming Lands-ItaliAfrica” the group shows its will to facilitate, both in Italy and in Europe, reflections and actions concerning a number of issues such as: food, agriculture, food sovereignty and the safeguard of traditional agriculture systems and biodiversity. Within this framework, being rooted in several Italian regions, the movement looks for a close collaboration with local administrations and any other stakeholder sharing the same vision of a family based agriculture at the core of sustainable development in rural areas.
